Volunteering – food for thought

This morning I was invited to ‘The Big Breakfast’ in the Europa Gallery, Sutton. The event was organised by Volunteer Centre Sutton as part of Volunteers’ Week and was a great opportunity to thank volunteers from across the London Borough of Sutton and increase awareness of the volunteering opportunities available.

I was invited through my volunteering activity rather than as a councillor and it was an interesting and useful event from both points of view.

The event was very well supported and the guests included the Mayor of Sutton – Cllr Sean Brennan OBE, Paul Burstow MP and Tom Brake MP.

For me the quote of the session was ‘No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted’ (Aesop).

Some interesting statistics included:

  • It is estimated there are over 50,000 volunteers in the London Borough of Sutton.
  • People who volunteer are 42% more happy.
  • Volunteers in Sutton represent over £7,200,000 of work.

You are likely to be happier and healthier if you are volunteer so why not pay a visit to Volunteer Centre Sutton?
